1 Loon Lake Fishing Derby
Griffiths, Dean; Waldron, Kathleen Cook
Orca Book Publishers 1551431424 / 9781551431420
1999
Hardcover
Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket

0.5 x 10.1 x 8 Inches; 32 pages; When his town holds a fishing derby, Wally goes into business selling worms. But his friends enter the bait business too, and soon the town is crawling with worm sellers. Chaos reigns. The young entrepreneurs dig up every garden in town to find bait, the fishermen load up on worms, and soon the fish have eaten their fill without swallowing one hook. With all the townsfolk overheated by the mess in their yards and every fisherman catchless and ready to blow, Wally has to find a way to restore order before the disaster turns into Loon Lake's last fishing derby.

Kathleen Cook Waldron's inspiration for this story came when she first noticed "Worms for Sale" signs springing up along the roadside of her lakeside community. Kathleen's previous titles include A Winter's Yarn and A Wilderness Passover.

Illustrator Dean Griffiths' overactive imagination has led to the wildest cast of characters to inhabit any town. His brilliant watercolor images also enhance The Patchwork House and The Lighthouse Dog.

Loon Lake Fishing Derby is the first of two books in a series. Book two is Rough Day at Loon Lake.
